Hambledon Hill Revealed

I am so enjoying painting all these trees and branches. I hope this has a feel of the past , Hambledon Hill is an old earth works and in sight of our house. I was going to call the picture ” Are we nearly there ?” as this view appears and vanishes only to re appear when you are nearly at the top.

These are sites well known to those of us who live in Dorset, Maiden Castle and Hod Hill being just two more similar mounds.

This was inspired by Fallen Log which I painted earlier in the year. I wondered if I could do it in snow! When I did, some of the shadows looked so like teepees I decided to follow that theme. It is named after a passage from Hiawatha.

: New paintings at The Studio, Stourhead

We are back at the Studio, First – View Gallery for four days this week. I am showing 3 new pictures all of trees or leaves.

Fallen Tree, Leaves at Stourhead, and 3 Shroton trees are all new

I am also showing the triple Marguerites and White and Red Poppies . Plenty of cards and prints as well as a few “portfolio” originals.

I had a good week at Stourhead and shall be there again next week, Monday 24th until Thursday 27th. 11am – 5pm in the First – View Gallery’s Studio Room.

I have been painting a lot of berries and Autumn leaves – one of which will be on display for the first time next week along with the Fallen Dorset Tree.

I had a very good evening at Milton Abbas Art Group on Monday, they were so welcoming. I shall be taking pictures of the work I did there and put them on the web site very soon.

OCTOBER EXHIBITIONS!

I am exhibiting at Stourhead National Trust Property, Mere, Wiltshire from:

Friday 7th October- Sunday 16th October with ONE closure on the 11th October for the day.

Then we open again at Stourhead from 24th October to 27th October.

I have been invited to join a group of exhibitors in the Gallery Annexe, which is next door to the main gallery. You may know that Stourhead is famous for the autumnal glory of the trees and October should be a good month for visiters.

I won’t be there everyday, but would be delighted to hear from people planning to visit, perhaps the days could coincide.

Before Christmas the New Dorset Art Group are planning an Open Studio short exhibition and the details of that will be published as soon as we have confirmed dates and participants.

Dorset Art Week for 2012 starts on Saturday 26th May and runs to 10th June. I shall be opening my studio and Garage gallery as usual.

You may notice that my prices for originals are creeping up. This reflects the price of framing, and also the demand for my work! I will always try to keep my prices reasonable as I love people to own a piece of original art work.

This is the big oak tree from the autumn coloured “In Russet Mantle Clad” I have painted the tree from the other side, so the road to Child Okeford stretches alongside the hedge. Diffferent colour palette, throughly enjoying the change! Will work on it again when we are back form hols.

I went on a weeks art course with Clare Shepherd and again played with colour and shapes. These are the images I produced. All of a Fallen Tree. I used a process of elimination to go from light to dark – and of course NO PENCIL!

while in France I just played with clours and images and in the end produced this “Whisper Poppy”.

I have been experimenting more with colour, washes and paper. Still on “Flambouyant” I have mixed ink and watercolour and discoverd the pure ink will run into the watercolour colur wash leaving a slightly spidery effect – but I LOVE the jewel brightness of the blue against the mixed neutral tones. The Transparent Orange and Antwerp Blue still show separately in the pools of the paper.

Had a great day today with many visitors and a chance to demonstrate how I set about a picture. Also the use of the traceur brush from Issabey that I use all the time. So busy I didn’t take any pictures but did a few more “Rothko watercolour squares” So far I have used colours to make a neutral but tomorrow I am going to investigate zingy colours – or as the young now say … or so I am imformed – colours with “pop”
